City’s Land Use Chief Steps Down

Jim Waring, the city of San Diego’s embattled deputy chief for land use and economic development, has resigned.

In a terse press release issued Aug. 14, Mayor Jerry Sanders announced the resignation, effective immediately, and said that an interim replacement “will soon be named.”

Waring has been embroiled, along with other city staffers, in a controversy involving an office tower built by Sunroad Enterprises in Kearny Mesa. Standing 180 feet tall, the tower exceeded federal height regulations by 20 feet, and was deemed a danger to pilots landing at Montgomery Field.

In June, Sanders ordered the top floors of the building removed. However, a story published by the San Diego Union-Tribune on Aug. 14 reported that Waring had continued efforts to reach a compromise in the matter.

Waring, who came on board in 2006, was not available to comment. The mayor’s spokesman, Fred Sainz, said that no further statement would be forthcoming.
