Kyocera Eyes Expansion for Tijuana Plant

Kyocera Corp. announced April 18 that it plans to double solar module manufacturing operations by 2011, and that it plans to expand its Tijuana factory’s capacity nearly fivefold.

Kyocera, which has its North American headquarters in San Diego, plans to spend 30 billion yen, or $250 million, on the expansion.

In Tijuana, expenses are expected to hit $33 million, expanding the production area with a second two-story facility. The factory, which manufactures solar photovoltaic modules, will increase capacity from 35 megawatts to 150 megawatts.

The plant is slated for completion by the end of March.

Another $33 million will be spent upgrading Kyocera’s European solar module production facility, and $8.3 million will be spent on its Chinese and Japanese facilities.
