Pentax Licenses Patriot Technology

Patriot Scientific Corp., a Carlsbad public firm that holds patents for microprocessors, said June 29 it signed Japanese camera manufacturer Pentax Corp. as a licensee of its technologies. Pentax is the seventh firm to purchase licensing rights from Patriot this year. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Other firms purchasing licensing rights of the Moore Microprocessor Patent Portfolio are Hewlett-Packard Co., Casio, Fujitsu, Sony Corp., Nikon and Seiko Epson.

Patriot Scientific co-owns the patents with the TPL Group, a Cupertino firm. The MMP Portfolio patents, filed in the 1980s, cover techniques that are contained in a wide variety of consumer products and appliances, including DVD players, cell phones and portable music players.

Patriot Scientific said it has notified some 300 companies of possible infringements on one or more of the patents contained in the MMP Portfolio.
