Spawar Chief Gets Second Star

Rear Adm. Michael C. Bachmann, who on Feb. 23 officially assumed command of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (known as Spawar) in San Diego, will receive a second admiral’s star, the Pentagon announced Feb. 24. Bachmann goes from being a rear admiral lower half to rear admiral.

Bachmann, 53, assumed command of Spawar from Rear Adm. William Rodriguez, Spawar’s chief engineer, who served as acting commander since November.

As Spawar commander, Bachmann is responsible for developing architecture and standards for the Navy’s vision of network-centric warfare. He is also chief engineer for the Navy’s command, control, communications, computer and intelligence systems.

Bachmann was previously vice commander of Naval Air Systems Command. The Astoria, N.Y., native was a 1974 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and has received several advanced degrees, including a doctorate in psychology and technology from the University of Southern California.
