New Transmission Line May Rise

San Diego Gas & Electric Co. has proposed the construction of a new electric transmission line between San Diego and Imperial counties, dubbed the Sunrise Powerlink. If approved, the line could go into service as early as 2010.

SDG & E; unveiled the proposal Aug. 31. The company said it plans to file documents related to the project with the California Public Utilities Commission this year and next year. It expects to complete an environmental report by mid-2006.

SDG & E; is a unit of Sempra Energy, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SRE. Shares closed Aug. 31 at $44.82.

If built, the line could import enough power for about 650,000 SDG & E; customers.
