Biocom CEO Uses Exercise as Escape Route

Joseph Panetta, the president and chief executive officer of Biocom, San Diego’s life sciences trade group, said exercising every day helps him clear his mind and escape from the daily grind.

“I have run, swam and biked all my life,” said Panetta, who is 51 years old and lives in Carmel Valley.

A 2002 San Diego rock ‘n’ roll marathon finisher, Panetta said he runs almost every day, swims three times a week and rides his bike once a week.

He finds each sport offers something different.

“Swimming is by far the one sport that allows me to clear my mind,” Panetta said. “It’s meditation. I don’t think about anything. I am in suspended animation when I do my laps.”

Running provides time for him to think.

“When I run, I tend to think strategically, formulate plans, and think about conversations and how I want to follow up on them,” he said.

Biking requires a lot of concentration.

“In biking, you have to pay attention to the road,” Panetta said, adding that it’s a great workout.

Like other executives, Panetta packs his running shoes when he goes on trips and books hotels near parks or running trails.

For example, “In Tokyo, I stay at the Park Hyatt in Shinjuku, so I just run in the park,” he said.

If running isn’t in the cards, he’ll hit the hotel gym. Panetta said he plays golf too, but mostly to network with businesspeople.
