Newsmakers — Tourism Hiring Off and Running

As the days get longer and the weather warms up, the season for hiring summer employees comes upon the tourism industry. Among the hiring companies is Loews Coronado Bay Resort, which had 71 positions open this year. The hotel held a job fair April 29.

Close to 100 applicants attended, and of those, 75 completed applications, said hotel spokeswoman Sara Harper.

More than anything, the job fair brought a burst of publicity for the hotel’s hiring push, Harper said.

The week before the job fair, an estimated 50 people applied, which was 20 percent more applications than usual, she said.

Harper attributed the increase to the radio ads and other promotions.

The hotel had partnered with Hilltop High School’s Travel and Tourism Academy in Chula Vista, donating $10 to the academy for every applicant who came in.

The hotel sent out a public-service announcement about a month before the event to local radio, TV and print outlets. It arranged paid advertising on the Sunday before the event and also took out newspaper ads.

“Some of the people may not have been available to come on Saturday for the job fair, but we think that the announcement of the job fair and the ads and the PSAs that ran sparked people to come in and apply on their own, before the job fair took place,” Harper said.

The jobs included assistants for summer activities, administrative positions, front desk, food and beverage, engineering and housekeeping.

The applicants weren’t solely high school students, Harper said. Many have had a lot of experience in summer tourism jobs, she said.

The students came from Hilltop High School, and other schools in Chula Vista and Imperial Beach, she said.

“That was another part of the marketing, is that our human resources department sent fliers out to all the local high schools and colleges as well,” Harper said.

Wages ranged from minimum wage with tips, with engineers being paid up to $20, she said.
