Local building contractors said they have reached major milestones on their commercial projects.

San Diego-based Ninteman Construction Co. Inc. crews have reached the halfway mark on a 5,000-seat multipurpose arena at the University of San Diego.

The 101,000-square-foot arena, named for Jenny Craig, founder of the company of the same name, will cost approximately $17 million when completed. Craig contributed $7 million toward the cost of the project, said John Messick, Ninteman's project manager.

San Diego architects Mosher Drew Watson Ferguson designed the facility.

Messick said five 222-foot-long steel trusses span the entire width of the arena. They were lifted into place by two cranes working in tandem, while a third crane was used to make the final placement.

Crews from DPR Construction Inc. of San Diego have topped out construction at the second phase of the La Jolla Spectrum Technology Park. It's a 77,000-square-foot building at 3215 Merryfield Row in the Torrey Pines area of San Diego designed for biotech tenants, said Maureen Wheeler, a spokeswoman for developer CarrAmerica Realty Corp. of Washington, D.C.

Delawie, Wilkes, Rodrigues, Barker & Bretton Architects of San Diego designed the building, she said.

R.G. Petty Construction crews are nearing completion on one large project and have finished up on another, a spokeswoman for the San Diego company said.

Construction is nearly done at the Otay Crossing Business Park at Siempre Viva Road and Enrico Fermi Drive in Otay Mesa, said Karen Namy, a spokeswoman for the contractor.

"The site constrictions were the biggest challenge in designing the facility," said Toby Hallal, building designer for TRH Land Planners Inc. of San Diego. "The three-acre site was relatively small and we designed two buildings that were smaller than originally conceptualized."

The two freestanding single-story concrete tilt-up buildings are a total of 64,000 square feet, Namy said. One is 28,815 square feet and the other is about 34,800 square feet, she added.

"The southern wall of one of the buildings was structurally difficult to build and costly because of the elevation between the existing site along the southerly property line and our proposed final grade and wall elevations," Hallal said.

R.G. Petty has also finished grading and poured the slab for a two-story 43,023-square-foot concrete building at Eastgate Mall and Judicial Drive in the Golden Triangle area of San Diego, Namy added.

Pacific Cornerstone Architects Inc. of San Diego designed the building, which is intended for biotechnology industry tenants. Nexus Properties Inc. of San Diego is the developer.

Bilbro Construction Co. of San Diego has finished the cast-in-place concrete shear walls and erected pre-cast concrete double-T supports and girders for a 38,000-square-foot parking structure at 6602 Convoy Court in Kearny Mesa.

Rob Bilbro, president of the company, said the project was completed late last month. Diego I Investments LLC of San Diego owns the facility and Burnham Real Estate Services, also of San Diego, provided construction management.

Smith Consulting Architects Inc. of San Diego designed the facility.

Meanwhile, JenJor Development Inc. of San Diego finished building the 10,180-square-foot Fortune Way Industrial Building in Vista, said Joseph Sapp, president.

The concrete tilt-up building was built for Costa Pacifica Development of Vista. JenJor's work on the project included shell construction and tenant improvements, said Tina Asmar, a spokeswoman for the contractor. ABL Associates of San Marcos was the architectural design firm.

Bycor General Contractors Inc. of San Diego started two tenant improvement projects in the past two weeks, said Rich Byer, president.

The first tenant improvement project is on 35,000 square feet of office and manufacturing space for Nu Ear, a hearing aid manufacturer based in Minnesota. Byer said he expects to complete the project at 6769 Mesa Ridge Road later this month.

His company is also working on a 6,100-square-foot office project for Willis Insurance Services of San Diego at 1615 Murray Canyon Road in Mission Valley. That project will be completed later this month as well, Byer said.
