Local Unemployment Shows Slight Rise

San Diego’s unemployment rate rose to 2.9 percent in January, up from December’s 2.5 percent, due primarily from the layoff of some 6,100 temporary workers in the retail sector, the Employment Development Department said.

Total nonfarm employment in January was 1.16 million, down by 12,000 jobs from the December low for last year. Besides the loss of jobs in retail, other areas that showed losses were the services sector, where 2,500 jobs were lost; manufacturing, down 700 jobs; and transportation and public utilities, down 500 jobs.

Compared with the employment numbers in January 1999, total nonfarm employment increased by 43,600, the EDD said. Jobs in the services sector was the biggest contributor to that number with 18,100 jobs.

Retail and the construction industries added 8,000 and 5,600 jobs, respectively, to the total.
