Several local building design firm officials said they are under way with major projects this month.

IR2 – Interior Resource Inc. is designing two projects, one for the city of Carlsbad and the other for the Long Beach Municipal Water District, said Nancy Andrade, project manager.

The company is designing the interior for Carlsbad’s new 64,000-square-foot offices for the Department of Public Works on Orion Way. It’s also working on the renovation of the Long Beach Municipal Water District building.

Work on the two-story, concrete tilt-up building for Carlsbad will begin in January. Completion is expected in December of that year, she said. The Long Beach project will start in June and is expected to be completed in March 2001.

Meanwhile, hospital executives approved Schmidt Scanlon Gordon’s conceptual architectural design for the intensive care unit expansion at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center. Construction will start in May 2001, said James Gordon, a principal of the firm.

His company is designing the expansion for an existing, unused area on the medical center’s fifth floor. When it’s completed, the 19,000-square-foot intensive care unit will hold about 28 beds.

Gordon said his firm was selected over several nationally known design companies because of its experience in designing health care facilities.

“In addition to a creative design, we also provided the client with a thorough analysis of existing conditions, identified challenges and opportunities and examined options for accommodating the ICU patient’s extended family during this critical stage of treatment,” Gordon said.

Two other design firms said they have started projects as well.

The McCulley Group of Solana Beach is designing the interior of the new 45,000-square-foot Southern California regional administrative and training center for Jack in the Box at 8690 Balboa Ave.

Howard Sneed Architecture & Design of San Diego started site master planning and building design for Maintenance Warehouse’s new 151,400-square-foot corporate headquarters at 10641 Scripps Summit Court near Scripps Poway Parkway.

Maintenance Warehouse is a wholly owned subsidiary of Home Depot, said Anne Sneed, principal-in-charge.

Top Producers: The team of Gregg and Debbie Neuman of Prudential California Realty in Mission Valley recently won the Top of the Rock Award for being No. 1 for sales volume among more than 42,000 Prudential sales associates nationwide.

Spencer Tenen, manager of the Mission Valley office, said the two sold more than $86 million worth of real estate in 1999 , a total of 310 homes.

Joe Southwick of Prudential California Realty’s La Mesa-El Cajon office also won an award at Prudential’s recent national convention in San Diego.

The Legends Award was presented to him for achieving national top producer status for the fifth time in his career with the company, said Joyce Hill, manager of the La Mesa-El Cajon office.

Charitable Acts: Two San Diego construction companies were recognized recently for donations to charitable organizations.

Ninteman Construction Co. was presented earlier this month with the Bishop Maher Award for its contributions to St. Vincent de Paul Village over the past 10 years.

The award, which is named for the third bishop of the Catholic Diocese of San Diego, was presented to the construction company for its nonprofit work on more than $11 million worth of construction projects to benefit the homeless shelter, said Cathy Riley, a company spokeswoman.

Conrad and Marilyn Prebys, owners of Progress Construction, have been named as executive sponsors of the 34th annual East County Children’s Ball, a benefit to be held April 28 at the Hotel del Coronado.

This is the third consecutive year the Prebys have served as lead sponsors of the benefit, said Jerry Fazio, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County. With their $10,000 contribution, they led Sharp Grossmont Hospital, which donated $5,000; Wells Fargo Bank, which also donated $5,000; and Valle de Oro Bank, which contributed $3,000, he said.
