Region Ranks 9th on Forbes High-Tech Employment List

San Diego tied with the Riverside/San Bernardino area for ninth place in a Forbes Magazine ranking of the best cities for high-tech employment.

The ranking, released Nov. 18, was based on data collected by research firm EMSI, and analyzed what areas gained the most jobs in manufacturing, software and services in the past 10 years.

The analysis found that Seattle was the No. 1 city to be in if you’re seeking employment in technology, followed by Baltimore, Columbus, Ohio, and Raleigh, N.C.

While the Silicon Valley area still has a huge concentration of tech jobs, it ranked No. 17 on the list, mainly because there was a net loss of some 80,000 jobs in the last 10 years.

Another area with a reputation as a tech hub that didn’t fare well in the survey was Boston, ranked 22nd. In the past 10 years, that area gave up 18 percent of its tech jobs, or more than 45,000 positions.

Of Seattle, Forbes noted that three tech powerhouses steadily contributed to its overall tech employment picture: Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com and Boeing Co.
