General Dynamics Reports Keel Laid in Construction of Commercial Tanker

General Dynamics NASSCO said that it laid the keel of a commercial tanker to be named Liberty on May 26 at its shipyard in Barrio Logan.

The ship is one of three 610-foot tankers to be built under a construction contract with SEA-Vista LLC, a partnership between SEACOR Holdings Inc. and Avista Capital Partners. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

NASSCO began construction in October 2015.

The ship is of the ECO design, which is billed as cleaner and more fuel-efficient than other tankers.

Seabulk Tankers Inc. will operate the Liberty once it is delivered. The ship’s owners plan to operate the tanker between U.S. ports; because of that, a U.S. law called the Jones Act requires that the ship to be built in the United States.

General Dynamics stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol GD.
