General Dynamics NASSCO christened and launched the Independence, a 610-foot commercial tanker, in a morning ceremony Dec. 12 at its shipyard in Barrio Logan.
The 50,000-deadweight-ton tanker slid down the inclined ways during one of the highest tides of the month.
The ship, with a capacity of 330,000 barrels of product, is the first of three to be built for SEA-Vista, a partnership between SEACOR Holdings Inc. and Avista Capital Partners.
NASSCO describes the ship as one of the most fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly tankers in the world. Its owners have the option to convert it to liquefied natural gas propulsion.
SEA-Vista Seabulk Tankers, Inc. will operate the ship, which has yet to be delivered to the client.
