Ballast Point Takes Overseas Delivery of Large New Storage Tanks

The Port of San Diego recently received a shipment of four 24-ton fermentation and storage tanks bound for Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits, as the brewer expands production at its main facility in Miramar.

A port district statement said the tanks were manufactured in Ludwigsburg, Germany and loaded onto a ship at Antwerp, Belgium, before arriving at the Port of San Diego’s Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal on April 28. The 69-foot-tall tanks were trucked for subsequent installation at Ballast Point’s brewery at 9045 Carroll Way, and will be used in the making of all of the company’s main production beers, including the flagship Sculpin IPA.

Ballast Point did not elaborate on costs or other elements of its facility improvements. “We are fortunate to have experienced rapid growth recently, and with that we must keep up with increased distribution,” said company spokeswoman Hilary Cocalis, in the port statement. “We are constantly adding new tanks and equipment to expand production at our main Miramar brewery.”

Ballast Point last year was acquired by New York-based Constellation Brands, in a $1 billion deal. The company also has brewing facilities in Little Italy, Scripps Ranch and Linda Vista, along with a tasting room in Temecula.

Port officials said that until recently, Ballast Point had most of its equipment shipped through Long Beach and trucked to San Diego. The brewer determined that the local port’s close proximity to its brewing locations, and its facilities for handling specialty “breakbulk cargo” – cargo that can’t fit into a container – made it a good choice to handle its heavy equipment.

Officials said Ballast Point plans to have additional equipment imported through the local port. Marshall Merrifield, chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners, called the shipment of the fermentation tanks “a great example of the diversity of the Port’s cargo.”
