Panetta Announces Biocom CEO Successor

LIFE SCIENCE: Tim Scott to Take Leadership Jan. 2025

SAN DIEGO — After 25 years, Biocom California President and CEO Joe Panetta is passing the torch.

Biocom announced today that Panetta will begin a new chapter as President Emeritus effective Jan. 1, 2025. Biocom also announced Panetta’s successor, Tim Scott – a longtime Biocom board member who has served as board chair since 2022.

Panetta, who was honored by the San Diego Business Journal with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021, joined Biocom in 1999 and in two-and-a-half decades grew the organization from a new San Diego-based association into one of the most influential life science trade associations in the world, with a current membership of over 1,800 organizations and offices in San Diego, Los Angeles, South San Francisco, Sacramento, Washington D.C. and Tokyo, Japan.

In taking on the leadership role at Biocom, Scott will be stepping down from his current role as CEO of AustinPx, a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), where he has served as CEO and a board member since 2022.

Scott’s notable life science career includes founding Pharmatek Laboratories, a CDMO sold to Catalent Pharma Solutions in 2016. He later founded and led the pharmaceutical company TEGA Therapeutics. His expertise in the life science industry includes everything from drug discovery and development to manufacturing and fundraising to partnerships and acquisitions. He has also founded or supported numerous spinout technology companies from UC San Diego and currently serves on the board of multiple biotechnology companies, including AustinPx, TEGA Therapeutics, Avelas Biosciences and DTx Pharma, which was sold to Novartis last year.

“These are big shoes to fill,” Scott said of taking over the reins at Biocom from Panetta. “Joe’s leadership and vision has transformed our industry, both in California and in Washington, D.C. His extraordinary contributions have established a strong foundation for Biocom California’s continued growth and life science industry leadership. He has been a stalwart supporter of this industry for most of his life, and I intend to build on his work to support California’s incredible life science community, which is the greatest in the world.”

Panetta highlighted how Scott’s numerous roles in life science gives him a “nuanced perspective” that will serve Biocom’s members across the industry’s many facets.

“Having collaborated with Tim for many years advancing the needs of the California life science industry, I have seen firsthand his passion for our industry and his commitment to patients,” he said. “I know that Biocom California is in good hands.”

Upon taking the CEO role, Scott will be leaving the Biocom board chair seat in the hands of chair-elect Sabrina Martucci Johnson, president and CEO of Daré Bioscience.

Panetta will continue to serve in his current role until Dec. 31 and following will transition to president emeritus and continue to lead Biocom’s international strategic relations and serve in an advisory role to Scott.
