Following the Local Biotech VC Funding Trail

The San Diego Business Journal frequently chronicles local funding rounds and the big dreams that accompany them. But what about the largest venture capital sources locally?

Objective Capital Partners recently released a report with the top biotech investors in San Diego companies from 2015 to Oct. 31 of this year. The data was compiled from DealForma financials.

Avalon Ventures led the pack in number of funding rounds, contributing to 10 deals with a total of $194 million during the period. Notably, the La Jolla firm participated in all of Synthrox’s financings, including joining others in a $63 million Series C round this spring.

San Diego genomics company Illumina invested $672 million, the most dollars during the span. Its investments include Human Longevity, a La Jolla firm trying to move past a period of executive exodus through a sharpened focus on commercialization.

All of the venture sources on the list are based in San Diego or have a footprint here. This is in line with a phenomenon that holds true in San Francisco and Boston as well: capital tends to stay close.
