XTRA Moving Down the AM Dial

San Diego sports fans will no longer find XTRA Sports on the dial at 690 and 1150 AM. The station’s frequency beginning Feb. 3 will be 570 AM.

The on-air line-up will remain the same; the only change will be the station’s focus on the Los Angeles Lakers, said Don Martin, the general manager of XTRA Sports 570.

“The signal strength is the same (as 690) but it gives us that cumulative (audience) of the Los Angeles Lakers to boost the radio station,” Martin said. “People in San Diego like the Lakers as much as people in Los Angeles. We are not leaving San Diego. Our signal is just happening to come out of Los Angeles (instead of San Diego).”

Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton, XTRA’s only sports talk show host to broadcast out of San Diego, will remain in San Diego, Martin said.

“We are the exact same station, the exact same line-up with the exact same shows,” Martin said.

The 690 station will fill the gap left in August with the transition of KPOP-AM 1360 to progressive talk.

XTRA 690 will begin airing standards music, featuring artists such as Frank Sinatra, on Feb.3.

The type of format for 1150 is expected to be decided during the week of Jan 17, Martin said.
