Wells Fargo & Co. Donates $2.4 Million to Nonprofits in S.D. County

Wells Fargo & Co.’s annual support for nonprofit organizations nationwide has sur & #173;passed $100 million for the first time in the company’s 155-year history. The San Francisco-based Wells Fargo contributed $2.4 million in 2006 to more than 325 non & #173;profit organizations and schools in San Diego County.

In November and December, Rubio’s Fresh Mexican Grill gave $1 of each St. Nick Combo sold to Volunteer San Diego’s annual A Visit From St. Nicholas program.

The effort raised $26,000 for Volunteer San Diego, which offers programs and services to those residents who want to volunteer their time to nonprofit agencies in the region.

Private electric power operator LS Power Group gave $25,000 to the Family Health Centers of San Diego. The funds will be used to cover the cost of pediatric exams aboard the KidCare Express III, which provides health care services to uninsured children and their families.

Tony Mezzadri, who suffered a severe spinal cord injury while surfing in 1994, gave $17,000 to the Center for Neural Repair and the Translational Spinal Cord Regeneration Research Program at UC San Diego.

The donation was given to support research into spinal cord regeneration for those paralyzed due to an injury.

The 98th anniversary Charity Ball held Feb. 10 at the Hotel del Coronado, a benefit for Rady Children’s Hospital, raised $400,000. The money will go to the Pediatric Dental Residency Program, which provides oral care to infants, children and adolescents.

San Diego County Credit Union sponsored its 15th annual Share Your Heart Auction, Wine Tasting & Casino Night recently. The Barona Band of Mission Indians and Kaiser Permanente were major sponsors of the event, which raised $45,000 for burn prevention, education and treatment.

The Jack in the Box Foundation has provided $100,000 in transportation and scholarship support for students at UCSD’s Preuss School, a middle and high school that provides college preparation education to low-income students who will become the first in their families to attend college. The foundation will be recognized for its support by the Hispanic Scholarship Council at UCSD’s Fiesta de las Estrellas celebration April 12.

Fresh Start Surgical Gifts hosted its annual Dream Day on Feb. 2 at the Firehouse Museum. The event raised $20,000 to provide reconstructive surgery to children with deformities. Ferguson McClure and Associates sponsored the event and Firehouse Brewing Co. and Barefoot Wine provided refreshments.

Home of Guiding Hands held its annual Heart & Hand Ball on Feb. 10 at the Town & Country Resort. Union Bank of California, Barona Band of Mission Indians and Phil Thalheimer and Jennifer Isaac sponsored the event. More than $95,000 was raised to provide social activities and field trips to people with developmental disabilities.

The eighth annual Heroes With Heart dinner sponsored by the Greater San Diego & Desert Area chapter of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America was held Feb. 3 on the USS Midway. The event raised $140,000 for research.

Three San Diego-area charitable organizations have contributed to the annual SCAMP Camp of the American Lung Association. The Nellie Perkins Foundation, the Rest Haven Children’s Health Fund and the San Diego County Employees Charitable Organization contributed $40,000 to the program, which sends children with asthma to summer camp.
