Ward’s Honors Geico, Once Again

Geico, the auto insurer based in Washington, D.C. with a regional office in San Diego, was named to Ward’s 50 Benchmark Group, one of only five property and casualty insurers selected for such recognition for 17 consecutive years, the company said July 31.

The Ward Financial Group, based in Cincinnati, ranked the companies based upon financial results, and reviews performance in the areas of safety and consistency.

A Geico spokeswoman declined to provide any financials for the company. It has 1,650 employees in San Diego.

A unit of Berkshire Hathaway, whose chairman is Warren Buffet, Geico generated premiums of nearly $2.85 billion in the first quarter of 2007, according to Berkshire’s first quarter report.

Geico’s pre-tax underwriting gain was $295 million for the same period, down from $311 million for the like period of 2006, according to Berkshire’s quarterly report.
