Viejas said Aug. 24 that it is going into the resort business , and in a big way.
The American Indian tribe unveiled plans for an $800 million complex, including a second casino and a resort hotel with spa. The band is planning a hotel with 600 rooms, but that number is subject to change, said a tribal spokeswoman.
Also planned are a movie theater, retail stores and restaurants, a parking structure and a cogeneration plant.
Viejas already has a casino and outlet center on its reservation, which is east of Alpine and next to Interstate 8.
The tribe estimated that the project will be complete by 2012. Tribal officials promised to work with county officials and hold community meetings regarding the project.
