Turning the Page: Library System Hires New Director

San Diego’s Public Library system gets a new director, Deborah Barrow, starting July 21, following the retirement of longtime director Anna Tatar, the city said June 17.

Barrow is the library director for the city of Sunnyvale in Silicon Valley.

Previously, she held the same job for the city of Watsonville. She also has served as new library project manager for the city of Chula Vista’s library system.

Barrow, who obtained her undergraduate degree in anthropology from Scripps College and her master’s degree in library science from the University of Southern California, will oversee a staff of 388 working at San Diego’s Central Library and its 36 branches. The library system’s 2008 fiscal year budget is $38.3 million.

She’ll be earning about $144,000 annually, according to a city spokesman.
