Tribe Inks Casino Pact, Plans to Start Building

The Santa Ysabel Band of Diegueno Mission Indians plans to begin construction of its casino near Julian in March and is aiming to open it by December.

This follows the signing of an agreement between the tribe and San Diego County this month.

The memorandum of understanding between the band and the county government calls for the tribe to make annual payments of at least $600,000 to the county. Some $300,000 of that amount will go to treat problem gambling. Funds will also go toward reimbursing law enforcement and emergency medical personnel for work related to the casino.

County supervisors approved the agreement Jan. 12.
