What: Ronald McDonald House.
Where: 2929 Children’s Way in San Diego, across from Rady Children’s Hospital.
Amenities: The 65,000-square-foot house and exterior courtyards feature 47 rooms, including 12 larger rooms with HEPA filtration systems for higher-risk patients. In addition, the house will provide a day-use “home” to make life easier for families with sick children in the hospital. It has laundry facilities, an arts and crafts room, classroom, play rooms, computer room, beauty salon and fitness room.
Interesting aspects: Due to the scarcity and high cost of land in the area, the facility is being built atop a seven-story parking garage. The house will be replacing the San Diego Ronald McDonald House, which opened in 1980 and has provided more than 120,000 nights of lodging for more than 10,000 families whose children face life-threatening illnesses.
