Goethe may have said, “Art is long, life is short,” but these days, art is rewarding, and life is expensive.
Performance and visual artists who are looking to be economically self-sufficient as they practice their craft can learn all about “The Business Side of Art” at a special series of classes being put on by the Oceanside Museum of Art.
Presented in conjunction with MiraCosta College’s Small Business Development Center, the classes will be held on eight consecutive Wednesdays beginning March 7.
David Branfman, an intellectual property attorney with San Diego-based David Branfman Associates, will explain how artists, songwriters and others can protect their work through copyrights and trade service marks. He will also discuss legal structures for individual artists.
Carole Enmark, director of the college’s Small Business Development Center, will present marketing tips, while guest speakers include successful artists who will share their areas of expertise.
The course will also include such basic business topics as simplified bookkeeping and business management techniques.
The cost of the class is $85 for museum members and $90 for non-members. To register, or for more information, call the Small Business Development Center at (760) 795-8740.
