The school year at The Bishop’s School in La Jolla got off to a good start , to the tune of $2 million.
Betsy and Doug Manchester contributed the gift to the school’s Education for Life Endowment Campaign. The gift will be used to fund financial aid for qualified students, endow the school’s chaplain program and establish several academic chairs.
“We deeply appreciate this generous gift from the Manchesters,” said Bishop’s Headmaster Michael Teitelman. “It will provide the opportunity for a number of students to attend Bishop’s as well as enabling us to provide an even greater educational experience for all of our students.”
The endowment campaign has a goal to raise $15 million by June 2002. So far, the school has raised about $13 million. When the campaign is complete, the school’s endowment will total $25 million.
The endowment is directed toward faculty salaries, financial aid and facility maintenance.
Doug Manchester is chairman of the board for Manchester Resorts, which owns the Downtown Hyatt Regency and San Diego Marriott and Marina.
