Tennis enthusiasts will have the chance to learn the basics of the game from top professionals at Tennis Fest 2001 this spring.
On March 25, from 1 to 5:15 p.m., Participants can learn the fundamentals of a perfect serve, forehand or backhand swing from United States Professional Tennis Association pro’s and instruction from area tennis instructors Ben Press and Monty Grout.
Dean Brittenham, director of locally based Shiley Elite Athletic Excellence, will present a program on developing athleticism in tennis, while Dr. Laura Alberton of the Scripps Clinic Medical Orthopedic Surgery Group will discuss tennis injuries.
The event is scheduled for March 25 from 1 to 5:15 p.m. at the Balboa Tennis Court at Morley Field and is free.
“We wanted to hold this event because I think it will benefit the game of tennis, and all of the people interested in taking up the game,” said Grout, co-chairman of Tennis Fest and a tennis instructor at Miramar College.
Grout said there was never any attempt to make money from the event. He said it was made possible through a $500 grant from San Diego District Tennis Association, the arm of the United States Tennis Association, and the donation of time from guest speakers and instructors.
“People will walk away with a lot of good information,” Grout said.
Manufacturers supporting the event include Wilson, Head/Penn and Dunlap. The companies will contribute demo racquets and prizes to be given away throughout the camp.
The San Diego District Tennis Association was formed more than 25 years ago with the goal to promote tennis in the community. There are 275 USPTA professionals in San Diego.
