For the 10th consecutive year, the San Diego Business Journal has teamed with the accounting firm Deloitte & Touche LLC to take the economic pulse of San Diego’s business community.
In previous years, nine key industries were targeted by the survey. This year, a 10th industry , E-commerce , was added.
Questionnaires were mailed to 1,111 executives in those industries. There were 194 responses, a 17.5 percent response rate.
The survey was mailed in November and returned by early December. The responses were tabulated by Deloitte & Touche.

As in previous surveys, most of the companies polled were small; 64 percent had fewer than 100 employees. Fifty-eight percent had annual gross revenues of less than $10 million.
At the high end, 6 percent had annual incomes of greater than $50 million, while 8 percent had more than 500 employees.
