Macromedia, Inc., the Anaheim-based software writer, will develop a new version of its Flash platform to work with BREW, Qualcomm Inc.’s software for mobile phones, the two companies announced Oct. 18.
Flash software permits animated graphics and sound. BREW, from San Diego-based Qualcomm, allows telecom carriers to deliver software applications over the airwaves. It also takes care of billing for application downloads.
The new software, called Flash Lite for BREW, is expected to ship in 2006.
Macromedia reports that during the past year, shipments of mobile devices running Flash nearly tripled, going from 12 million to 35 million units.
BREW stands for Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless.
