Sharp Electronics Division Buys Aztec Imaging

Aztec Imaging, a Santee-based provider of office equipment founded in 1969 by Rod Jones, was acquired May 21 by Sharp Imaging and Information Co. of America in a deal that retains all of the company’s 85 employees.

“Other than Rod Jones retiring and our name changing, everything else will remain the same,” said Dale Wedge, president of what is now called Sharp Business Systems San Diego.

“We’re part of a much bigger company with much greater resources. Our employees will now be able to obtain benefits that we could never do as a small, family-owned business.”

The San Diego office is Sharp Imaging’s fifth in the nation, and second in California. The division of Sharp Electronics Corp. is based in Mahwah, N.J.

Japan’s Sharp Corp. had revenue of $28 billion last year.

In addition to selling and servicing digital copying machines, Aztec provides business software systems for such operations as content and document management, and transforming paper documents to digital data.

Terms of the transaction were not revealed. Last year, Aztec did $15 million in sales, compared with $13.8 million in 2005.

Wedge said Sharp will offer its line of office equipment, but will continue to offer the same lines sold by Aztec, including Fujitsu, Bell & Howell and Hewlett-Packard. The company also has plans to expand its operations here, and continue opening offices around the country.
