Sempra Awards 13 Scholarships to Baja Students Attending SDSU

Sempra Energy awarded 13 students from Baja California scholarships to San Diego State University’s International Business Leadership Program.

The awards ceremony was held at Sempra Energy’s headquarters June 29. Gail Naughton, dean of SDSU’s College of Business Administration, and Michael Morgan, vice president of international affairs for Sempra Energy, presented the scholarships to the deserving students.

“Many of our scholarship winners already are working on plans to open businesses or raise funds for projects in their hometowns,” said Morgan. “This important program recognizes Baja California as a key international gateway for commerce, attracting global companies.”

The students were selected based on their academic qualifications, career goals, demonstrated leadership skills and intent to live and work in Baja California after graduation.

The United Jewish Federation of San Diego County held its 70th annual meeting June 19 at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. Three volunteers received special recognition awards , Claire Ellman, Murray Galinson and Dr. Andrew Viterbi.

MJE Marketing Services won two Emmy Awards, one for the San Diego Unified Port District documentary titled “The Working Waterfront: The History and Heritage of San Diego Bay,” and the other for the New Car Dealers Association for the San Diego International Auto Show television spot.

Daniel Spinazzola was named Nice Guy of the Year on June 13 at a luncheon at Buca di Beppo. He will be honored at the Nice Guys major fund-raising event Oct. 20.

Each year, the Nice Guys recognizes someone who has given his or her time, money and support to help San Diegans improve their lives.

Nice Guys has given more than $6.5 million since 1979. Spinazzola is founder and chairman of Diversified Restaurant Systems and serves on several boards, including Starpal and Taking Control of Your Diabetes.

Childhelp’s San Diego chapter held its second annual Moonlight Salsa at Loews Coronado Bay Resort on June 23. Past President Ray Grimm and his wife, Daran, were honored for their support of Childhelp and the prevention of child abuse. Lexus, Barney & Barney and Kreiss Furniture were among major sponsors of the event.

The Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad recognized Richard Macgurn as recipient of the Bob Grimes Humanitarian Award.

This award is dedicated yearly to recognize individuals whose commitment to the guiding principles of the Boys & Girls Club movement, enduring dedication, and caring stewardship has made a positive difference in the lives of young people.

During July, the PostalAnnex+ in Poway’s Twin Peaks Plaza will be collecting items to send to troops stationed overseas. Suggested items for those who want to help include toiletries and dried food items. PostalAnnex+ will be donating the postage to ensure all contributions will be sent to San Diego troops and services.

“A lot of people in our community have friends and family overseas and we would like to make it easier for them to reach out and help,” said store manager Renu Khanna. “We think this is an excellent way to get our community involved in supporting our men and women fighting at war.”

The Jewish Community Foundation will offer one of the first philanthropy camps in the nation this summer , a one-week day camp for high school students from July 30 through Aug. 5.
