San Diego Gas & Electric Co. will test high-speed Internet communications technology on its power lines by year-end, said a company spokesman.
It would be the first test of broadband over power lines, or BPL, in the state.
An SDG & E; executive spoke of the pilot project in a recent hearing before the state Public Utilities Commission.
While the company has decided to go forward with a pilot project, it has not yet settled on specifics, spokesman Ed Van Herik said in an interview Feb. 15. The company must still decide where it will test the technology, the number of customers it will serve, and when the test will begin, said Van Herik.
Van Herik said SDG & E; is interested in the technology’s potential to communicate utility information.
