Executive Spotlight: Drexel DeFord

Drexel DeFord has been appointed to chief information officer for Scripps Health. He will oversee all information technology programs for the five-campus hospital system. Most recently, DeFord served as chief technology officer of worldwide operations for the U.S. Air Force Healthcare System since 2002. Before that, he was chief information officer for the David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base. “DeFord was selected for his deep understanding of information technology in a health care setting, his strong management skills and his compatibility with Scripps values and operating principles,” said Scripps President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Van Gorder.

Banking and Finance

Pacific Coast National Bank has hired Vignette Matthews as vice president and manager of the Encinitas office. She has more than 18 years of bank management, sales, lending and business development experience and most recently was with Union Bank of California. USE Credit Union has added Gabriela Alvarez as financial literacy manager and Joetta Mihalovich as vice president, branch manager. Alvarez, who has more than 10 years of training and development experience, will manage USE’s financial education programs. Mihalovich has 26 years of commercial banking experience and most recently served as vice president of stateside operations for USA Federal Credit Union. Terry Siaca has been named vice president of commercial lenders for First National Bank’s Escondido office. Most recently, Siaca was with 1st Pacific Bank of California.

Construction and Design

Gilbane Building Co. has named Bruce Hoffman as manager of Western regional operations. He will be responsible for managing all construction operations throughout Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah. Marcia Reardon has been promoted to accounting supervisor for Roel Construction Co. She has been with the company for more than nine years and has served in different areas of the accounting group.

Health Care and Biotech

ResMed Inc. has promoted Adrian Smith with full-time responsibility for the management of the company’s European operations and Brett Sandercock has been appointed to chief financial officer. Smith served as vice president and chief financial officer for 11 years before being promoted. Sandercock most recently served as vice president of treasury and finance and has been with ResMed for eight years.

High-Tech and Manufacturing

Shirley Adams has joined Sullivan International Group Inc. as senior vice president of the Advanced Technology Division. She will be responsible for supervising and directing corporate development in advanced technologies. Adams has more than 20 years of management leadership and high-tech experience and most recently served as president and chief executive officer of Systems Engineering Solutions Inc.


Dana Dunwoody has joined Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP as a partner in the business trial practice group. Most recently, he was with Mazzarella, Dunwoody & Caldarelli. Klinedinst PC has added Ana Himelic and Paula Zecchini to the firm’s San Diego law office.

Media and Marketing

Bobbi Herdes has been promoted to director of finance at Southwest Strategies. Herdes has more than 20 years of senior-level consulting experience in marketing and project management.


The San Diego International Sports Council has installed Doug Barnhart as its 2006 chairman. Lance Schulte has joined Pacific Municipal Consultants as a municipal consultant. Most recently, Schulte served as an assistant director for physical planning at UC San Diego. Anheuser-Busch, Inc. has promoted Kurt Martin to director of sales and marketing for its Wholesaling Division. He will be responsible for all sales, marketing, revenue and strategic innovation. Martin has been with the company for more than 20 years and most recently served as director of on-premise sales.

Government and Nonprofit

Mike Hansen, director of asset services and general manager for CB Richard Ellis, has been appointed to the 2006 chairman of the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce. “His expertise in management organization will focus the chamber to the benefit of our members,” said chamber President Terry Saverson.

Real Estate

Rick Shroeder has been named president of Ryland Homes’ San Diego Division. He succeeds Jon Werner, who held the position since 2001. Shroeder joined the division in May 2002 as vice president of land acquisitions, then was promoted to vice president of division manager in July 2004. Dennis Hearst has been hired as senior director for Cushman & Wakefield. He has more than 26 years of industry experience and most recently served as principal for the Staubach Co. Jeffrey Dowler has joined Re/Max Associates’ Encinitas office and Kevin Conover has joined Re/Max Associates’ Clairemont office as real estate sales agents. Dowler has 15 years of corporate human resources experience. Most recently, Conover worked as a youth counselor. CB Richard Ellis has promoted Dean Asaro to senior vice president. Asaro has 22 years of industry experience and was previously first vice president.

Edward Jones was ranked No. 1 in Registered Representative magazine’s ranking of the nation’s Seven Largest Financial-Services Firms. Ashbrook Communities has been named Builder of the Year by the Desert chapter of the Building Industry Association of Southern California.


Del Mar Kiwanis donated $1,800 to La Clase Magica, a citywide tutoring program for underprivileged children. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded San Diego County more than $4 million to fund both permanent and temporary housing for homeless people in the region. Pardee Tree Nursery and the Escondido Creek Conservancy have donated 100 oak trees for the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve tree-planting project, where local volunteers plant the trees. Cavignac & Associates donated $6,700 in gift cards to the San Pasqual Academy, Monarch School, Polinsky Center, YMCA Becky’s House, Marine Support Fund and Voices for Children.
