Executive Spotlight: Michael Abernathy

The Carlsbad office of the commercial real estate firm of Lee & Associates has named Michael Abernathy principal.

Abernathy is an office and industrial leasing and sales specialist focusing on landlord representation. Before joining Lee & Associates, he served as vice president at Voit Commercial Brokerage.

Abernathy has completed sales and lease transactions exceeding $200 million, including the Ruffin Business Center buildings and an 80,000-square-foot office park in Kearny Mesa.

Banking and Finance

Caris & Co. has announced the appointment of Cynthia Davis to vice president in the health care investment banking group. Davis will focus on the capital needs of the biotechnology and health care community from the investment bank’s Del Mar headquarters. Most recently, Davis worked with the Aequitas Group Inc. as director of valuation and pricing services.

Debra Schwartz has been named executive vice president of Mission Federal Credit Union. Schwartz brings 25 years of experience in both credit unions and banks. In her new position, she will assist management in all leadership functions. Most recently, Schwartz served as chief financial officer at First Future Credit Union, after spending 12 years at San Diego County Credit Union, where her titles included executive vice president and first senior vice president.

Construction and Design

PCL Construction Services Inc. has announced the addition of Gerry Rodrigues as a district manager of business development. Rodrigues will be responsible for managing the marketing and business development practice. He brings seven years of industry experience to his position.

Architectural Concepts Inc. has named Tawndra Williams an interior designer/project manager. Before joining Architectural Concepts, Williams worked in the hotel, restaurant and contract interiors sectors.

ID Studios, a Solana Beach strategic planning and design firm, has hired Andrew Fordham as a job captain and project manager.

Carrier Johnson has hired Christopher Rooney as a senior associate and project manager. Rooney will provide project management services for the firm’s projects. He brings years of experience in hospitality and mixed-use projects to his new position.


Michael Rizza has been promoted to associate of ILA Zammit Engineering. Rizza is a registered professional engineer and has been with ILA Zammit since 2004. He has nine years of industry experience, and before joining ILA Zammit was a project manager with Henderson Engineers Inc. of Lenexa, Kan.

Environmental Consulting

RBF Consulting has announced the promotion of Scott Taylor to senior vice president and office manager of its Carlsbad office. Taylor will also join the firm’s corporate management committee. With 20 years of experience in storm water quality, flood control and storm water management, Taylor specializes in surface water quality and flood control.

The company also announced the promotions of new associates Scott Eisenhart, from the Carlsbad office, and Alissa Sigala and Gary Mellom, from the San Diego office.

Chambers Group Inc. has announced the appointment of Laurence Reider to general manager of the San Diego office. A professional chemical engineer with 30 years of experience in environmental consulting and engineering, Reider will provide technical and marketing leadership for the firm.


Barona Valley Ranch Resort & Casino recently promoted Kathy Eagle to director of ornamental horticulture. Eagle will oversee all landscape development and care for the property, including design, installation, irrigation and maintenance. Eagle joined Barona Valley Ranch eight years ago as landscape manager.

La Mesa City Councilman Dave Allan has been appointed to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Re-entry Advisory Committee. Allan will represent CDCR as the committee’s representative to the League of California Cities.

The San Diego/Imperial Counties chapter of the American Red Cross has announced that Chris Marek has been appointed director of development and communications. In this position, Marek will be responsible for leading the chapter in meeting its fund-raising and communications goals. Marek joins the chapter after two years as the development director at the Salvation Army Kroc Center.


Arrowhead Wholesale Insurance Services has hired Joshua Parrish as an account executive for the firm’s professional liability division. Parrish, who most recently headed the commercial department for a local retail brokerage firm, has been a management liability underwriter and an account manager for large agencies. He will be responsible for brokering and marketing miscellaneous professional liability and agents’ errors and omissions coverage in his new position.


San Diego-based Trovillion, Inveiss & Demakis has announced the promotion of David St. Clair from associate to his new partner position, responsible for managing the Santa Ana office. St. Clair specializes in defending workers’ compensation claims, and handles serious and willful misconduct petitions. He has 14 years of litigation experience.

Solomon Ward Seidenwurm & Smith LLP has added Cecilia Chen as a transactional associate. Chen practices business and real estate law, focusing on commercial real estate, including financing, leasing and purchases and sales. Before joining Solomon Ward, Chen was a member of the Virginia State Bar and practiced with the firm of Vanderpool, Frostick & Nishanian.

KFMB radio station has promoted Gina Landau to vice president and general manager. Landau began her career at KFMB in 1995 and has been the director of sales for the past seven years.


Five Point Capital, an equipment leasing firm, has named Joshua Hoffman vice president of sales. Hoffman is responsible for directing all sales of the company’s leasing services via the firm’s telesales department. Hoffman has 16 years of experience in sales, management and operation, with the last four years at the senior executive level.

Anacomp Inc., which provides document and business process management solutions, has appointed Wayne Ford to senior vice president of marketing, channels and strategic alliances. Ford joins Anacomp from EMC Captiva, where he served as vice president of channels, alliances and business development. He brings 25 years of industry experience to his new position.

Networkcar, a wireless vehicle management company, has announced that Craig Whitney has been appointed director of marketing. With 25 years of industry experience, Whitney will be responsible for formulating and implementing the marketing strategy and tactical plans. Most recently, Whitney served as senior director of marketing for Experian Business Information Solutions.
