Executive Spotlight: Bob Adkins

Neighborhood National Bank has hired Bob Adkins as its new chief executive officer. He was formerly NNB’s chief operating officer. His employment with the company started in 2001, when he was hired as chief financial officer. Adkins previously served for eight years as senior vice president and chief financial officer of Broadway Federal Bank. Before that, he was senior vice president and chief financial officer of Westside Bank of Southern California. He serves on the board of directors of the California Independent Bankers, the California affiliate of the Independent Community Bankers of America, and the San Diego Blood Bank. The bank’s former chief executive officer, Bob McGill, will continue as chairman as well as president and chief executive officer of Neighborhood Bancorp, while Adkins will focus on growing the non-bank subsidiaries.


Banking and Finance

PricewaterhouseCoopers has announced that Eric Hornsten and Owen Murray have been admitted to the partnership. Hornsten joined the firm in 1993 and for the last six years, he has served as a manager and senior manager on the audits of several large public companies. Murray joined the firm in 1992 and has vast consulting and auditing experience with a wide variety of industries.


Construction and Design

Ashbrook Communities has named Linda Wood vice president of sales and marketing. She will be responsible for all sales and marketing functions. Wood previously was vice president of sales for D.R. Horton-Western Pacific Homes. Wood is a member of the National Association of Realtors and serves on the board of directors of BIA Cares for Kids. JPI has announced the appointment of Kelly Cunningham as senior market research analyst. She will assist in the development of new multifamily projects and acquisitions for JPI’s Western divisional office. Cunningham previously worked for the city of San Diego as chief economist. Before that, she served for 17 years at the San Diego Chamber of Commerce as research director. Andrew Schmidt has joined Gillespie Design Group Inc. as a landscape designer. Schmidt will assist with a full spectrum of project types, including commercial/retail, single-family and multifamily and urban development. European Natural Stone has hired Roland Hoven as chief financial officer. Hoven has 20 years of financial management experience and will be responsible for designing new procedures and infrastructure within the accounting and production departments. He will also support the addition of new product lines and create systems to streamline product flow.


High-Tech and Manufacturing

National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. has announced a number of senior management appointments. Steve Stroebel has been promoted to vice president of material. In 1991, he joined Nassco, where he held management positions in manufacturing systems and production control. Bob Hillstrom has been promoted to vice president of production. He joined Nassco in 1980, serving in various production management positions. Steven Davison has been promoted to vice president of operations support. He joined the company as director of planning and facilities engineering in 1995. Michael Ryan has joined Environmental Business Solutions as an associate professional/regulatory analyst. Ryan will be responsible for working with clients and the California Leaking Underground Storage Cleanup Fund program.


Law

Best Best & Krieger LLP has added three associates, William Pate, Jodi Smith and Glenn Spitzer. Pate practices in the areas of private and public litigation and was previously an associate with Stutz, Artlana Shinoff & Holtz. Smith joins the firm’s schools and special education practice and was previously a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice. Spitzer is a member of the firm’s litigation practice and will also focus on natural resources and real estate law. He was previously with Daley & Haft. Lisel Gerguson has joined Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP as an associate on the intellectual property team, where her practice focuses on copyright, trademark and patent prosecution. Most recently, Gerguson was with Perkins & Miltner, where she focused her practice on a broad range of intellectual property matters as well as environmental, business and equine litigation.


Media and Marketing

Whitelaw Marketing has hired Lisa Kovach as an account coordinator. Kovach, a former San Diego Business Journal reporter, will help implement public relations campaigns, create news releases and develop marketing strategies.


Miscellaneous

Amy Colliton has been named senior vice president of sales and marketing and Annette Gregg has joined as vice president of operations for Concepts Worldwide. Colliton has eight years of industry experience and was serving as general manager and senior vice president of operations since 2000. Most recently, Gregg served as vice president of destination services for the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau. The San Diego LGBT Community Center has announced its board leadership for fiscal year 2006. Richard Valdez will continue to serve as chairman; Dale Kelly Bankhead and Todd Gloria will serve as vice chairs; Matthew Doherty, secretary; Lennie Alickman, treasurer; and Joel Valenzuela, member at large. The California Endowment has announced the appointment of Sid Voor & #173;ak & #173;ka & #173;ra as a program officer for San Diego, Orange and Imperial counties. Voorakkara, who has experience in public policy, will focus his grant-making activities on transforming the region’s health care system to be more responsive to the needs of under-served communities. Voorakkara was previously a freelance political and corporate consultant for the Democratic National Committee, the U.N. Foundation, Californians for Tax Fairness, and Home Front Communities.


Restaurants and Hotels

Jack in the Box Inc. has announced that Paul Melancon has joined as vice president and controller. He will be responsible for overseeing the company’s general accounting, financial reporting and financial services activities. Melancon most recently served as vice president and corporate controller for Guess? Inc.


Real Estate

Phoenix Realty Group has announced the appointment of Tammy Harpster as vice president of acquisitions in the firm’s San Diego office. Harpster will be working to identify development partners and close deals for the company’s San Diego Smart Growth Fund. Harpster previously served as assistant vice president for Buchanan Street Partners. Davlyn Investments has announced the hire of Aaron Pacillio as director of acquisitions. Pacillio joins the firm from Pacific Property Co.


Awards and Recognition

First Bank’s Erin Lopez recently received the Celebrating Leadership Award and the Lucy Snow Memorial Conference scholarship from the San Diego group of Financial Women International. Lopez received the leadership award for taking over the registration responsibilities following the death of Lucy Snow, a longtime member of FWI. The U.S. Department of Treasury honored AppleOne Employment Services with the Large Business Partner of the Year Award for fiscal year 2004. The award recognizes a large business that has demonstrated exceptional commitment to partnering with small and disadvantaged businesses.


Philanthropy

The Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate at the University of San Diego has announced that it received a $100,000 gift from EastLake Co., making it the second gift from the company in the last eight months. The gift will help pay for the center’s operating expenditures.
