Executive Spotlight: Marian Marum

Marian Marum has joined Howard Associates, Inc. as vice president. Marum, who established her own firm in 1984, has more than 25 years’ experience in urban design and landscape architecture, specializing in civic and community facilities, urban redevelopment, corporate office parks, educational and medical campus projects as well as military and transportation projects. “I’ve been following Marian’s career for years and have been impressed by the depth of her technical skills as well as her innovative design solutions,” said John Howard, the president of Howard Associates.


Construction and Design

Fuscoe Engineering-San Diego, Inc. has promoted Michael Wolfe to senior project manager. He will continue to lead his individual engineering team as well as manage additional project managers and teams. Wolfe has more than 20 years of project and construction management experience. John Langham has joined Tucker Sadler Architects as a junior designer. He will be responsible for the drafting, design, presentation and coordination of commercial residential and master-planning projects. Reno Contracting, Inc. has promoted Chris Heim to project director and Craig Hueners to senior project manager and estimator. Heim, who has 30 years of experience in the construction industry, joined Reno in 1993 as project manager. Hueners, who has 30 years of project management experience, has been with Reno since 1996. Roel Construction has hired Kim Murphy as accounts payable specialist and Taylor Klasinski as assistant project engineer. Murphy has more than 13 years of administrative experience and most recently served as operations manager for Jerry’s Heating and Air. Klasinski has two years’ experience in the construction industry and most recently served as assistant project manager for Isec, Inc.


Health Care and Biotech

Invitrogen Corp. has named Mahendra Rao its vice president of research, stem cells and regenerative medicine. Most recently, he served as section chief for stem cells and senior investigator in the laboratory of neuroscience for the National Institute on Aging. San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care has named Kathleen Pacurar its vice president of development. In this position, she will oversee all fund-raising efforts. Pacurar has 18 years of community relations and fund-raising experience and most recently was executive director for UC San Diego Health Science Development. Ocera Therapeutics, Inc. has named Xavier Frapaise its chief medical officer. He has experience in managing clinical and preclinical development, clinical operations and other key strategic functions. Most recently, Frapaise was corporate officer and vice president of research and development of Tap Pharmaceutical Products, Inc.


High-Tech and Manufacturing

PowerGenix has named Joseph Carcone its vice president of business development. He will be responsible for bringing the company’s battery products to market and overseeing the company’s growth. Carcone has more than 30 years of power and battery expertise and has held senior positions with various companies, including Sanyo Energy Corp., General Electric and AT & T.; Linda Gallo has joined SCS Engineers as office manager. She will be responsible for overall management of the environmental engineering firm’s San Diego office. Most recently, Gallo served as director of administration for the Agency for Jewish Education. Nolte Associates, together with Nolte de Mexico, has appointed Carlos de la Mora to head business development for Mexico. Burkett & Wong has added Diane Earnest to the firm’s structural department as a structural project manager. She has nine years of structural experience, with projects ranging from sanctuaries to office structures to multiunit residential complexes. Illumina, Inc. has appointed Arthur Holden its senior vice president of corporate market development. Most recently, Holden, the company’s principal founder, was chairman and chief executive officer of First Genetic Trust. He serves as chairman of the Pharmaceutical Biomedical Research Consortium and the DMD Translational Research Consortium.


Law

Gayle Blatt, a partner with Casey Gerry Schenk Francavilla Blatt & Penfield, has been named president-elect of the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego. Blatt has been a member of the CASD board for 11 years and has been with Casey Gerry for more than 20 years.


Restaurants and Hotels

Loews Coronado Bay Resort & Spa has promoted Bridget Smisek to associate director of sales. Most recently, she served as a meeting and convention service manager and catering, spa and tennis coordinator for the Hilton Resort, San Diego. Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. has named veteran lodging industry executive Victor Barothy-Langer general manager of the US Grant-Luxury Collection Hotel. Barothy-Langer has more than 25 years of experience in hotel management, primarily with luxury properties. He previously served as hotel manager for the Starwood-managed Westin St. Francis in San Francisco. Before joining Starwood, he served as hotel manager for the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.


Miscellaneous

Miva, Inc. has promoted James Harrell to vice president and general manager of its small-business division. “James has more than eight years of e-commerce experience and engineering management, and his promotion represents a significant step forward to the evolving future of Miva,” said Chief Executive Officer Peter Corrao.


Real Estate

Michael Armstrong has joined GVA IPC as a senior associate. He will focus primarily on office sales and leasing in the Mission Valley area. Armstrong has more than 13 years of lending and commercial real estate experience and most recently served as a loan consultant for Fidelity Mortgage Corp. Equastone has named Chris Stai its vice president of acquisitions and has promoted John Locke to vice president of acquisitions. Stai will be responsible for sourcing investment opportunities in California, Oregon and Washington. Locke will source investment opportunities in Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Texas.
