Executive Spotlight: Kevin Graney

General Dynamics Nassco, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, has promoted Kevin Graney to vice president of engineering.

Graney joined Nassco in 2006 as director of quality assurance. Before joining the company, he was the program manager of capital projects and metrics associated with the Virginia-class submarine program at the General Dynamics Electric Boat subsidiary.

His experience in design engineering includes managerial positions in the Virginia-class program and with Electric Boat’s involvement in the U.S. Navy’s CVN-21 program and the British HMS Astute-class submarine program.

Before he began his shipbuilding career, Graney was a Navy submarine officer.

Banking and Finance

U.S. Bank has hired Cyrus Vafi to manage the company’s commercial credit portfolio in San Diego. In his new role, Vafi will work with the bank’s commercial banking team to grow its local client base.

KMJ|Corbin & Co. has announced the appointment of Hany Louis to the position of audit partner. In his new role, Louis will direct day-to-day activities handled by KMJ’s audit teams. He also will oversee staff and manage the growth and development of employees.

Construction and Design

James Cocose has joined Blokhaus Development as a senior project manager. In his new position, Cocose is responsible for project management, construction administration and business development of several projects locally.

Bob Zaiser was promoted to chief estimator at J.R. Filanc Construction Co. Inc. In his new role, Zaiser, with more than 28 years of industry experience, is responsible for bidding design-build and design-bid-build work. He previously served as a senior estimator at Filanc.

Advantage Homes has announced the appointment of Ken Turner to division manager. Previously working as a sales executive in Sacramento, he will now be responsible for growing sales in the company.

Joe Madden has joined Sudberry Properties Inc. as director of leasing. Madden brings to Sudberry more than 11 years of industry experience. He will be responsible for directing all aspects of the leasing process on Sudberry’s new town center developments.


Darlene Shiley has been elected chair of the University of San Diego’s board of trustees. Shiley has served on the board since 1990, and has contributed to USD’s capital projects and programs.


Andrew Zahurak has been hired as an associate professional at the San Diego office of SCS Engineers. In his new position, Zahurak is responsible for Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments, transaction screens, limited environmental site assessments and storm water sampling.

Government and Nonprofit

Floyd Farley, chief executive officer of Graybill Medical Group, is the new board chairman of the Escondido Chamber of Commerce. Farley has served as CEO of Graybill since 1998.

Angela Northrup has been named director of leadership events at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s San Diego-based Pacific South Coast chapter. Northrup previously worked for United Way of New York City as director of strategic community partnership. In her new position, she will be responsible for coordinating fund-raising events.

Denise Brucker has been named to the board of Partnerships With Industry, a 22-year-old nonprofit providing job-training, placement and support services for adults with developmental disabilities. A specialist in employment law, Brucker was recently named a partner with the law firm of Paul, Plevin, Sullivan and Connaughton LLP.

James Bouck, a product manager with Qualcomm Inc., also has been named to the board at PWI. A retired Navy flight officer, Bouck was a strategy and analytics manager for DiamondCluster International Inc. in Chicago before joining Qualcomm. He began working with PWI through volunteer work, mentoring a San Diego State University student who was working on a project for the organization.


Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP partner Michael Lyon has been named head of the firm’s real estate and environmental team. Lyon has been practicing real estate and financial law in San Diego since 1982 and currently works in Procopio’s Carlsbad office.

Solomon Ward Seidenwurm & Smith LLP has announced the addition of Lawrence Sherman as of counsel. Sherman joins the firm from Sherman & Lapidus LLP, where he served as senior partner for more than 12 years. Sherman’s practice focuses primarily on real estate transactions with an emphasis on commercial activity in Southern California.

Fish & Richardson has added Kristin Strojan as a new business litigation associate in its San Diego office. Previously, Strojan was an associate attorney at DLA Piper US LLP. She has experience in business and IP litigation.

Media and Marketing

(W)right On Communications has hired Kelly Badger as an account executive. Badger has 10 years of experience in media and public relations, most recently in theater and the creative arts. She began her career as a television reporter and assignment editor.

General Growth Management Inc. has hired Jill Harlow as group vice president of marketing, where she will spearhead the marketing strategies for 18 shopping centers located in California, New Mexico and Arizona. Harlow will work from the company’s Chula Vista offices and handle marketing for projects, including the Otay Ranch Town Center.


On Call Employee Solutions Inc. has announced the addition of Frank Casella as senior vice president of sales. Casella brings 25 years of sales and sales management experience to the organization. In his new role, he is responsible for extending the company’s market research and maintaining existing client relationships.

Real Estate

Sullivan Group Real Estate Advisors has hired Katherine Lewis as communications manager. Lewis will direct the firm’s marketing and public relations efforts for the local office and three other locations in Sacramento, Dallas and Scottsdale, Ariz. She will also oversee all event planning needs for the company’s bi-annual seminars.

Commercial Realty Advisers of La Jolla has hired Mike Armstrong as a broker. Armstrong has more than 15 years of industry experience. He will specialize in office sales and leasing.

The Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors has selected its new officers and board of directors. The 2008 directors are David Bradstreet, Nikki Dohme, Phyllis Gritts, Ken Jonsson, Marina Romeri and Betty Stoike. Officers are President Barbara Brown, President-elect Pat Russiano, Vice President Manuel Lopez, Secretary Gustavo Lanatta and Treasurer Jon Miller.
