Executive Spotlight: Jeannie Durfey

USE Credit Union has promoted Jeannie Durfey to senior vice president of operations. She will be responsible for overseeing central operations, card services, general services, facilities management, branch operations support, employee development and loss prevention. Before her promotion, Durfey served as vice president of operations. She has been with the company for the past 23 years. Durfey is also the president of the Rancho Bernardo chapter of Soroptimist International.

Banking and Finance

College Loan Corp. has appointed Steven Snyder as chairman of the board. He will also serve as executive vice president. Snyder has more than 32 years of executive management experience and most recently served as a managing director of Affiliated Computer Services.

Construction and Design

Sundt Construction has promoted Geoff McMillen to project manager. McMillen has nine years of experience in the construction industry and previously served as project engineer. American Newland Communities has announced executive changes. LaDonna Monsees, vice chairman and president, has been promoted to chief executive officer. Monsees will continue with the responsibility as vice chairman and president. Derek Thomas, vice chairman, has been appointed to chief investment officer, while remaining as vice chairman. Daniel Van Epp has been named chief operating officer and executive vice president. Roel Construction Co. has promoted Jason Gauerke to assistant manager and Diane Huston to senior project coordinator. Gauerke has more than five years’ experience in the construction industry and joined the company in 2005. Huston has more than 20 years of clerical experience and has been with the company since 1998.

Health Care and Biotech

Avanir Pharmaceuticals has named Theresa Hope-Reese its vice president of human resources. She will be responsible for overseeing all human resources practices and policies. Most recently, Hope-Reese served as corporate vice president of human resources for more than six years at Water Pik Technologies Inc.

Technology and Manufacturing

Barbara Alexander has been elected to Qualcomm Inc.’s board of directors. “Her extensive background in banking and finance, along with her experience working with global companies, makes her a valuable addition and brings an additional perspective to our board,” said Irwin Mark Jacobs, the chairman of Qualcomm. Enterprise Partners Venture Capital has named John Leenane its entrepreneur in residence. He will be responsible for expanding the firm’s presence in the Bay Area by concentrating on digital content and wireless deals. Epsilon Systems Solutions Inc. has promoted Stuart Teshima to vice president and corporate controller. He has 20 years of finance and accounting experience and most recently was a controller at Titan Corp.


The University of San Diego has named Tim O’Malley its vice president of university relations. He will be responsible for leading USD’s institutional advancement, development, marketing and creative services and public relations departments. “Dr. O’Malley brings to USD a record of extensive leadership and success in all aspects of higher education advancement. He has spent over 30 years in education as instructor, administrator and advocate,” said Mary Lyons, USD’s president. For the past nine years, O’Malley served as the vice president of university relations at Pacific University. He has served on numerous boards and committees in the nonprofit sector, including the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, Forest Grove Chamber of Commerce, Washington County Hospice Foundation and the WSU Foundation. Steve Pinning has been appointed as the senior director of the San Diego County Office of Education’s Regional Occupational Program. For the past three years, Pinning served as North County ROP coordinator of the County Office of Education.

Media and Marketing

Oster and Associates has promoted Barbara Squires to production director. She will be responsible for managing the graphic designers, copywriters and photographers as well as choreographing the development and production of creative products. For the past six years, she has served as art director for the company. Whitelaw Marketing Inc. has promoted Lisa Kovach to senior account manager. She will be responsible for helping to oversee all client accounts as well as manage and execute specific work programs. Bailey Gardner Inc. has hired Troy Scarlott as creative director. He will be responsible for helping to direct new brand positioning. Most recently, Scarlott was an associate creative director at McCann Erickson.

Government and Nonprofit

The San Diego Science Alliance has named Mark Shults its president and Mickie Beyer its executive director. The San Diego Better Business Bureau has named Julien Brown as a customer service information specialist. She will be responsible for answering inquiries, handling complaints, providing information to members and updating records.


Overland Storage Inc. has promoted Philippe Cazaubon to vice president of worldwide sales. He will be responsible for overseeing the company’s global sales efforts, strengthen relationships and grow its revenue. Cazaubon has been with the company for the past six years. Before that, he served as international sales manager at HM Electronics.

Real Estate

Equastone has hired Camille Sobrian as vice president of marketing. She has 22 years of marketing management experience and most recently was managing director of Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP’s business consulting division. Andra Welsh has joined Re/Max Distinctive Properties as a real estate agent. Joe Burns has been named broker manager for Santaluz Realty. “His vast luxury residential real estate experience and management skills are a tremendous asset to our clients and staff members alike,” said Donald Kent, the president of Santaluz. Most recently, Burns was a sales associate for Lahontan in Lake Tahoe.
