Executive Spotlight: Richard Miller
Richard Miller has been named president and chief executive officer of Information Systems Laboratories following the retirement of Michael Dow. Miller, previously executive vice president and chief operating officer, joined the company in 2003. Miller led the company’s defense sector until being promoted to chief operating officer in 2007. Miller managed projects for several government organizations, including the Office of Naval Research, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Naval Air Systems Command and several intelligence agencies. Miller has more than 20 years of experience in the defense industry.
Banking and Finance
General Mortgage Corp. hired Ed Northrup as loan officer for its Mission Valley office. Northrup has more than 20 years of mortgage lending experience and has spent the last 10 years as a mortgage broker.
Hedy Tiongco has joined New England Financial as a financial representative. Tiongco will offer securities, mutual funds, annuities and life insurance products.
Construction and Design
Doug Barnhart, inducted as the 89th president of the national Associated General Contractors organization, is the first top official to hail from San Diego. Barnhart will lead a staff of 70 professionals in the AGC’s office in Washington, D.C., that includes 11 full-time staff members that represent the association on Capitol Hill.
Sempra Energy said Molly Cartmill, director of corporate community partnerships, will move to the role of director of local government affairs. Cartmill will oversee all Southern California governmental affairs for the company. Frank Urtasun, director of local government affairs, will assume the role of director of corporate community partnerships. Urtasun will oversee all charitable giving for Sempra Energy and its utilities. Urtasun will also become executive director of the Sempra Energy Foundation.
Robert Turner, who spent more than 20 years in the U.S. Navy, has been named to the new position of veterans affairs coordinator for San Diego State University’s College of Extended Studies.
Nolte has hired Darab Bouzarjomehri as engineering manager of the firm’s San Diego public works group. Bouzarjomehri has more than 25 years of experience in design and management of large-scale public transportation facilities involving federal, state and local government agencies.
Health Care and Biotech
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has elected five new officers. Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas’ chair of obstetrics and gynecology, Dane Shipp, fellow-at-large, assumed his role on May 8. Shipp has been a member of the organization since 2003. Others from across the nation were also elected.
Mark Talamini, elected president of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, is professor and chairman of the department of surgery at UC San Diego Medical Center.
Pala Casino Spa & Resort has announced Bill Bembenek as the chief executive officer. Bembenek is a 16-year veteran of the gaming industry. In his new role he will be responsible for developing new business strategies for long-term growth and profitability for the entire resort.
Kelly Commerford has been named director of marketing for the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. Commerford is a certified hotel marketing executive and has earned many industry awards.
Radisson Suite Hotel Rancho Bernardo has hired Terry Wood-Abeyta as director of sales and marketing. Wood-Abeyta has more than 25 years of hospitality experience.
John Carson, partner with Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear, has been elected president of the International Technology Law Association. Previously, Carson was a member of the board of directors and was elected assistant secretary in 2004, secretary in 2005, treasurer in 2006 and vice president in 2007.
BRE Properties Inc. appointed Henry Hirvela to executive vice president and chief financial officer. Hirvela will be responsible for all corporate-related accounting, treasure and finance activities.
Technology and Manufacturing
Ardea Biosciences Inc. has appointed John Beck as senior vice president, finance and operations and chief financial officer. Beck has more than 20 years of financial management experience.
San Diego Natural History Museum has appointed two new board members. Matt Hom, of Rejuve MedSpa & Wellness, joins the board. Robert Armstrong III, a career banker with more than 18 years of experience with San Diego Private Bank, has also joined the board.
