The airline terror scare disclosed Aug. 10 has brought new rules for travelers, as well as heightened security at San Diego International Airport.
The people running Lindbergh Field offered a few tips for business travelers:
– Be at the airport two hours before your scheduled departure time.
– Consult the airport’s Web site, www.san.org, for the status of your flight.
– Call your airline to learn about potential delays. “There aren’t too many delays anymore, but that’s always a possibility,” said Steven Shultz, a spokesman for the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, on Aug. 11.
– Got liquids? Better put them in your checked baggage. The Transportation Security Administration will not let passengers carry on water, toothpaste, roll-on deodorant or other liquids. A more complete list is available on the Web at www.tsa.gov.
– Expect lines to be longest in the mornings.
– Be ready to take off your shoes during screenings. That was optional before. It’s mandatory now.
– In addition to screening near the public areas of the airport, be prepared for another screening at the gate.
By Aug. 11, roughly 80 National Guard troops had joined the security forces at Lindbergh Field. Shultz reported extra airport staff were also on hand, working to smooth the process of getting people to their flights.
