Coronado: More Medical,

Retail Space Coming in ’07

San Diego developers Farshad and Farzad Yaghouti have broken ground on a three-story retail, office and medical building in Coronado.

The site, at B Avenue and Ynez Street, is half a block from Orange Avenue, and a few blocks from the Hotel del Coronado. Work is expected to be completed in July.

The 24,000-square-foot building will have retail space on its ground floor, with office and medical spaces on the second and third floors. Surface parking will be complemented by underground parking. The estimated cost for construction was undisclosed.

An anchor tenant would have the option to name the building, said Brandon Keith, who is handling leasing with Chuck Wasker. The leasing agents are with San Diego-based GVA IPC.

Joseph Cristilli of Galvin Cristilli Parshalle Architects of San Diego designed the structure. Carlsbad-based White Construction Co. is the general contractor. The exterior will feature split-faced block with copper finishes.

Oceanside: State of the

Art Business Expo Slated

The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for its sixth annual North County Business Expo, set for March 15 and open to businesses throughout San Diego County.

With more than 60 exhibits and hundreds expected to attend, the event is being billed by the chamber as North County’s “state of the art business-to-business expo.”

“We expect this to be a tremendous event,” said Scott M. Ashton, director of sales and marketing for the chamber, which has 969 members. “We have a very diverse group of businesses that will be exhibiting. We’ve already sold out 20 percent of the space so far.”

Previous events have included everything from financial institutions, advertising agencies and educational institutions, to businesses catering to health and fitness, entertainment and leisure, and restaurants handing out free samples. The upcoming event also will feature a technology pavilion, said Ashton, along with four still-to-be-determined business-related workshops. The location of the expo has not been determined.

“The event provides exposure to hundreds of potential customers, and quality business information through the workshops,” he added.

Free passes to the event can be obtained by visiting www.oceansidechamber.com.

San Marcos: More Time

To Bid on Park Project

Would-be San Marcos park contractors have extra time to submit bids for a 30-acre project.

The North County city has extended the deadline to submit bids for the project from Aug. 31 to Sept. 21 after an addendum had to be issued to clarify various facets of the redevelopment project.

The project is proposed for land behind Mission Hills High School, near Mission Road, and will include a skate park and softball fields. Published reports estimate that the park will cost between $9 million and $11 million.

Vista: Moonlight Theater

Program Remains a Hit

Moonlight Stage Productions is presenting “Dreamgirls,” a musical based loosely on the rise of a superstar Motown singing trio, the Supremes.

“Dreamgirls,” a Broadway hit that will soon be released as a feature film, plays at the Moonlight Amphitheatre stage in Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace, from Wednesdays through Sundays, starting at 7:30 p.m. through Sept. 24.

Tickets range from $19 for lawn seating to $34 for orchestra seats.

This is the 26th year the city of Vista has put on live theater at its park amphitheater, with ticket sales close to last year’s season, which generated $757,000 in ticket sales.

Moonlight Productions is an entity set up to manage live theater productions. It is owned and operated by the city of Vista’s cultural arts program.

“This year is shaping up almost as successful and we are just under $700,000 in sales so far,” said Dan Kays, managing director for the city’s cultural arts program.

This year, the city invested about $127,000 to install some 900 new seats, but depending on what’s playing, the facility can hold more than 2,000 people.

After the season ends, the amphitheater will get a new box office on its north side, due to a recent grant from the county. The amount of the grant was unavailable by press time.

Among the sponsors for the theater program are Cox Communications, the Issa Family Foundation and Escondido-based Community National Bank.

Poway: Council Puts Its

Money Where Calls Come

The Poway City Council approved contributions in the amount of $5,000 to support 211 San Diego on Sept. 5.

The 211 system is operated by Info Line, based in Akron, Ohio, and is a service for local residents to get information on an assortment of topics, such as day care services, nonprofit organizations and disaster and crisis information.

Poway’s contribution makes it the first city in San Diego County to support 211.

Poway City Council’s spokeswoman said it decided to donate the money because the city often receives calls from residents who are seeking a variety of information that it cannot provide.

La Mesa: Expanding Bar

Getting ADA Compliant

Johnny B’s Bar and Grille in La Mesa has nearly completed its expansion into space previously occupied by an antique store, giving the pub direct access to the main drag of downtown La Mesa.

Manager Lynne Lopo said the 500-square-foot expansion was primarily to bring Johnny B’s up to code with the Americans with Disabilities Act, allowing handicap access to bathrooms and the main bar area.

Kruschensky Construction of Alpine has been working on the project. An estimated cost was not available by press time.

The expansion also created a new main entrance to the 8-year-old bar on the more heavily traveled La Mesa Boulevard as opposed to its less visible entrance on Fourth Street.

According to Lopo, the expanded area is open for business, although there are some finishing touches to be done.

The expansion hasn’t used the entirety of the unoccupied antique store space next door.

“(Remodeling the entire space) would have been a major undertaking and it would have changed the feel of the bar as well as add lots of expenses,” Lopo said.

“We weren’t trying to make a whole new Johnny B’s; we wanted to keep the neighborhood-pub feel and extend it.”
