Qualcomm Buys nPhase

Qualcomm Inc. said Nov. 16 that it has acquired Chicago-based nPhase LLC. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The company will become part of the business unit that runs OmniTracs, Qualcomm’s wireless system for tracking big-rig trucks and other mobile assets.

The nPhase unit also deals in wireless communications, but it specializes in gathering data from fixed sites, such as cell towers, gas pipelines and assembly line robotics. A Qualcomm executive said such technology will complement the San Diego company’s current offerings.

NPhase will continue to offer products and services under its own brand.

Qualcomm trades on the Nasdaq under the symbol QCOM. Its stock closed Nov. 15 at $37.70.
