San Diego low-income residents who claim they have been denied medical services by the county filed a class-action lawsuit Jan. 24 in San Diego Superior Court.
The Western Center on Law & Poverty and the San Diego law firm of Fish & Richardson are co-counsel in the suit, which names five plaintiffs who allege that they and others were denied care by County Medical Services.
According to the lawsuit, the policies of the county are in violation of California law, denying lifesaving care to any low-income resident whose monthly income exceeds a limit. Even with income exceeding a limit, the lawsuit says, low-income residents might not be able to pay for their medical care.
The suit estimates that several thousand more applicants are eligible to join the class-action.
