North County Times Looks to Trim News Staff

The North County Times, a Lee Enterprises publication, made a “voluntary separation offer” directed at 20 workers in its 120-member newsroom staff Feb. 13, said the newspaper’s publisher.

Peter York said the severance package would include up to 26 weeks of pay and a lump sum of money to cover extended health insurance through COBRA.

“We said we would consider up to 20 full-time employees,” York said.

He cited declining advertising revenue as the reason for the offer, but would not say how steep the decline has been or for how long.

“Our trend line mirrors the same trend line as everyone else in the area,” he added, referring to such metropolitan dailies as The Press-Enterprise in Riverside and the Los Angeles Times.

The deadline for acceptance of the offer is Feb. 25. It was not made to other departments, and York said there is no contingency plan at this time.

“We’ll have to wait and assess where we are when the 25th rolls around and we see who decides to take the offer,” he added.

The daily publication currently employs a staff of 415 people and has a circulation of about 90,000.
