David Copley, 54, is the heir to the La Jolla-based Copley Press Inc. newspaper chain of 10 daily newspapers, nine weeklies and one bi-weekly. The San Diego Union-Tribune is the company’s flagship publication. It also owns a wire service, Copley News Service of Washington, D.C.
Copley’s mother and long-time matriarch of the family business, Helen Copley, died in 2004. The company was founded in Illinois by Ira Clifton Copley. David Copley is chief executive officer and president of Copley Press and publisher of the Union-Tribune. This year, Copley is on Forbes Magazine’s list of the 400 richest Americans with an estimated fortune of $1.2 billion.
He underwent heart transplant surgery in June 2005 at Sharp Memorial Hospital and later donated a reported $5 million to Sharp Healthcare, the hospital’s operator.
