Estimated worth: $100 million
In 2002, Sid and Jenny Craig sold the weight loss business they founded in 1983 to a private investor group led by ACI Capital for about $115 million.
Their ownership then was about two-thirds, and they still retain a 20 percent stake. Carlsbad-based Jenny Craig, Inc. did about $350 million in sales last year, and operates 650 company owned and franchised centers in the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Guam.
The Craigs are horse racing enthusiasts and travel the racing circuit around the world. One of their horses, Candy Ride, won the 2003 Pacific Classic at Del Mar, garnering the bulk of the $1 million purse.
In 1992, they gave $10 million to Cal State Fresno’s School of Business, Sid’s alma mater.
In 2000, the Craigs committed $10 million to the University of San Diego, most of which was spent to construct a sports complex named the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
