New Leader Brings Commercial Experience to Althea

Althea Technologies, a privately held San Diego-based contract manufacturer that provides clinical trial services to life sciences firms, appointed a new leader to oversee its expansion efforts, the company said Oct. 21.

Shabbir Anik, former president of pharmaceutical development services at Patheon, will serve the role of president and CEO beginning Nov. 15.

“I think it’s a tremendous development for Althea because we’re bringing on board a seasoned executive in this industry that knows this business well,” said Althea cofounder Francois Ferre, who will continue to serve the company as a co-chair, along with Magda Marquet.

Ferre said Anik was better poised to lead the company in expanding its commercial manufacturing capabilities.

“We wanted somebody with commercial experience,” he said.

Anik holds a doctorate degree in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s degree in business administration from Santa Clara University. He began his career at Syntex, where he served in various positions including vice president and program director. He also worked for biotech company Neurex as senior director of pharmaceutical development and operations before joining Patheon, where he built and managed its global pharmaceutical development services business.
