New Carrier Boasts Nonstop D.C. Flights

Discount-fare airline Independence Air will soon make a push into California, beginning with direct flights between Washington Dulles International Airport and Lindbergh Field.

Joe Craver, chairman of the board of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, confirmed that the Dulles, Va.-based airline is scheduled to begin once-daily, nonstop, round-trip service between Washington Dulles and San Diego International Airport on April 14.

“We’re absolutely delighted anytime we have a new carrier that brings new service to San Diego,” said Craver, who is also the president of San Diego-based Galaxie Management.

On Monday, the airline was advertising one-way fares between $109 and $174 for the San Diego-Washington route. The fares had to be purchased online at least two weeks in advance.

Currently, only United Airlines serves Lindbergh Field with direct, nonstop flights to Washington Dulles.

Also on April 14, Independence Air is scheduled to begin daily, nonstop, round-trip service to Las Vegas, and on May 1 it is to initiate such service to San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Jose, as well as Seattle, according to the airline’s Web site.

Additionally, Aloha Airlines launched new, daily, round-trip service from Lindbergh Field to Honolulu International Airport in Oahu on April 3. The only other airline with daily round-trip flights from San Diego to Honolulu is Hawaiian Airlines.

Within the last six months, the Airport Authority also announced four new nonstop destinations for different airlines including America West’s daily, nonstop service to Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, Aloha Airlines’ daily flights between San Diego and Maui and its other nonstop, daily routes between San Diego and Reno, as well as Alaska Airlines’ nonstop service to Vancouver.
