Navy Hospital Retires Turbines, Receives $1 Million

San Diego Gas & Electric Co. presented a $1 million check to two Navy officials July 10.

The Navy earned the check by accumulating emission reduction credits for replacing three old gas turbines with one cleaner burning turbine at the cogeneration plant at Naval Medical Center San Diego.

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command installed the new turbine, which reduced nitrogen oxide pollution by 14.7 tons per year. The new turbine, which produces 4.6 megawatts, is a significant upgrade over the old turbines, which produced 0.6 megawatts each.

Pam Fair, vice president of customer operations at SDG & E;, presented the award to Rear Adm. Len Hering, Navy Region Southwest commander, and Capt. Steve Wirsching, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest commanding officer.

SDG & E; is a subsidiary of publicly traded Sempra Energy.
