Natural History Museum to Host Dos Aguilas Binational Fiesta

The San Diego Natural History Museum will host the 7th Annual Dos Aguilas Binational Fiesta on April 5. The event provides support to the museum’s binational education and scientific research efforts. Those being honored are Rodney Lanthorne, president, Kyocera International Inc.; Saul Garcia Huerta, president, Kyocera Mexicana; Mauricio Monroy, managing partner, Deloitte Baja California; and Theresa Drew, managing partner, Deloitte San Diego.

OneSource Distributors in Oceanside recently received a Mark of Excellence Award from San Diego Gas & Electric Co. for its performance during San Diego’s 2007 wildfires. “OneSource was a critical part of our supply chain and instrumental in the restoration of service to our customers,” said Michael Niggli, chief operating officer of SDG & E.;

For the 10th consecutive year, Union Bank of California and KPBS celebrated Black History Month with the presentation of Local Hero of the Year awards. The 2008 honorees are Kadir Nelson, arts; Dee Sanford, business; Debra Stephens, community activism; Sharletta Richardson, education; Cleo Malone, lifetime achievement award; and Steven Collins, public service. They are recognized for their contributions to the community.

Mark McMillin, president and CEO of the Corky McMillin Cos., has been inducted into the Building Industry Association of San Diego County’s Hall of Fame. As a 30-year veteran of the homebuilding industry and third-generation real estate entrepreneur, McMillin has been proactive in the BIA since entering the field.

Benchmark Landscape Inc. received a first-place 2007 award from the California Landscape Contractors Association in the commercial maintenance category for its work at the San Diego Tech Center. The company has provided maintenance services at the center since 1993. The center, a 41-acre commercial office campus, features 10 office buildings, a restaurant, Japanese garden and private athletic club located in Sorrento Mesa.

The San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club presented the Peacemaker Award to U.S. Naval Commander Michael Bice on behalf of the officers and crew of the USS Peleliu. Bice and his crew were part of a 10-country partnership committed to a four-month humanitarian journey in 2007 that provided medical and dental care, construction assistance and engineering expertise to the people of the Philippines, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea and the Soloman Islands.

President Karen Haynes of CSU San Marcos presented Palomar Pomerado Health with the university’s second annual community engagement award for its support in launching the university’s nursing program in 2006. PPH committed $2.5 million to convert space at the San Marcos Ambulatory Care Center to create the PPH Center for Health Education, which houses the new nursing school.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad recognized Ash Ibrahim as board member of the year at an annual recognition dinner. Ibrahim was recognized for his spirit and devotion to kids.

Lora Heramb, vice president of sales and marketing for Brookfied Homes’ San Diego/Riverside division, was presented the Lee Hubbard Award during an annual installation event of the Building Industry Association of San Diego County. Heramb is the first woman to receive the award.

Leadership awards were presented to Marian and John Benassi and Connie and Bill McNally at the Kids Korps USA Gala held at the Four Seasons Aviara in Carlsbad. Both couples were recognized for their support and leadership roles in the San Diego chapter of Kids Korps.

American Red Cross volunteer Sue Zebick was recognized by Baskin-Robbins on Feb. 12 at its Tierrasanta Boulevard store. She volunteered more than 30 hours a week to help those who lost their homes in the October wildfires. Zebick will receive a year of free ice cream.

In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, Soroptimist International of San Diego will hold its 36th annual Women of the World event at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel. The honorees are Kathi Anderson, Diane Cox, Jeanette Day, Ceferina Pulgar Ruiz, Caroline Steward and Kathryn Vaughn. They will be recognized for making differences in the lives of women or girls through professional or personal efforts.
