General Dynamics Nassco said Aug. 27 that it has begun construction on the first of a series of tanker ships for a commercial client, New Jersey-based U.S. Shipping Partners.
The 600-foot-long ship will be named Golden State and is expected to go into service in California.
U.S. Shipping Partners placed a $1 billion order for nine ships in August.
Nassco said it planned to lay the Golden State’s keel in December and deliver the ship in early 2009.
